Meet Ariel
Named one of the New York Jewish Week's 36 Under 36 Jewish change makers in 2021, Ariel Stein is the founder of Jewish Family Magic, an online platform designed to make Jewish living fun and accessible for the whole family. Ariel developed her passion for Jewish education through over 15 years of experience teaching in the classroom, informal education on college campuses, and staffing youth programs. Ariel earned her BA in Judaic Studies and Organizational Psychology from the George Washington University and earned her MA in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary. I am an interfaith family. Is Hanukkah Family Magic a good fit?
Yes! HFM is a fantastic resource for families of all backgrounds, including interfaith families. It includes some history on the holiday and background on the customs (like why we play dreidel and eat foods fried in oil) in addition to the activities, recipes, crafts etc.
How easy/difficult are the activities?
The HFM activities are designed to do with your children ages 2-6. All of them require some level of adult supervision. Most of the supplies are things you already have at home or could find easily at the craft store.
Most of the activities also include a #MomHack, which is kind of like a tip or a shortcut you could use, depending on your child’s age/abilities and your preferences. For example, one of the menorah crafts gives you an option of coloring your candles OR cutting out a colored candle printable.
What level of knowledge about Hanukkah do you need?
HFM is designed for families of all backgrounds. Whether you’ve been celebrating your whole life or if this is your first year doing Hanukkah with your family, this if for YOU! You don’t need to have any previous knowledge or experience to enjoy doing the activities, crafts and recipes.
Will there be messy and not so messy options?
Yes! Many of the activities include a “less mess” option. For example, in one craft, you could choose to paint your child’s hand for their handprint OR you could trace their hand on a paper and cut that out instead (and you’ll get the same result ;).
